The Polytechnic of Coimbra, in partnership with the Municipality of Coimbra, the Municipality of Aveiro, the Municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova and the University of Aveiro will launch the project LIFE PAY- Tool to reduce waste in South Europe on the 24th of November at 2 pm in Lisbon. The event is free and registration is required.
The project aims to test a PAYT (pay-as-you-throw) waste tariff model that is fair for the consumer and the merchant as well as it will encourage proper waste separation. Another benefit from this system is the reduction of municipalities’ costs with the waste collection and treatment, contributing to its economic sustainability.
The project, budgeted at 2,517,571 €, is co-financed by the European Union’s LIFE program and will run for 3 years. It is hoped that this initiative will allow the development of transferable methodologies to similar regions in Europe, thus the participating municipalities are pioneers in the implementation of the PAYT concept.
