New recyclable containers to increase recycling and preserve the environment

The municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova has been reinforcing the number of recyclables containers in places of greater population concentration, having installed, in the second half of 2018, another 31 equipments in order to increase the volume and quantity of multimaterial recycling.

With this reinforcement, the population of the municipality of Condeixa will benefit from an increase in the containerization capacity for selective disposal and improve the level of accessibility to this equipment. The locations of the new location points resulted from a previous study prepared by the Division of Environment and Urban Services of the municipality.

“In addition to improving people’s accessibility to recyclables containers, it is expected that this investment will increase the separation of waste and thus the recycling rate, thereby gradually reducing landfill”, underlines Nuno Moita da Costa, president of the Municipality of Condeixa.

This measure “will help to promote a more sustainable territory and promote the improvement of the quality of life of citizens, but for this, the collaboration and involvement of citizens is necessary to deposit their waste separately”, appeals the mayor.

This investment results from the development of the RECICLA project, reimbursed through the Operational Program Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources (POSEUR) and the LIFE PAYT project, a European project co-financed by the European Union’s LIFE program.

The municipality has also invested in other selective deposition equipment, namely pellets and mini-oils, with the latter aiming to boost the door-to-door selective collection service for used cooking oils, an existing program since 2010, which aims to ensure the correct routing to treatment of these residues, valuing them, and preserving the water resource.

At the same time, to promote good recycling practices, it is also planned to carry out environmental awareness and education campaigns that will focus on the themes of prevention and reduction of waste production and on deposition.
