Workshop on “Sustainable waste management” organized by the National Technical University of Athens and Vrilissia Municipality

On the 20th of December 2021, a workshop under the thematic of “Sustainable waste management” targeting academics, researchers and students was organized by the National Technical University of Athens in collaboration with Vrilissia Municipality. To this end, representatives of all academic level of the National Technical University of Athens, as well as representatives of the Association of Secondary Education Officers of Athens B’ Department were invited. Amongst the 28 participants, there were also representatives of technical interest for the project from Vrilissia Municipality. The speakers involved the:

  • D-WASTE company, Mr Antonis Mavropoulos
  • Representative of followgreen project and of the Hellenic Solid Waste Management Association (HSWMA), Ms Sofia Spiliotakou
  • Special Advisor of the Ministry of Environment, Directorate of Waste Management, Ms Katerina Kapetanaki

The Workshop was part of a discussion on the barriers to implementing a PAYT project in a Greek municipality, considering the existing situation. The conversation also incorporated themes regarding the technical development of an integrated PAYT scheme focusing on the diversion of waste streams of recycling interest from mixed waste bins. This way transferring of LIFE PAYT system experience to other Municipalities was highlighted and discussed with the advisory board. Finally, the sustainable waste management character was highlighted by discussing the most recent legislative changes in the field of waste management.
